Girls basketball continues their win streak

The girls’ basketball team has had a hot start to their 2024-2025 season. After performing well in preseason scrimmages, the team was ready to play games that would count against their record.

As was covered last week, the girls opened their season up at home with a big win over conference opponent Lehman Catholic 50-17. Here, senior Jenna Brumbaugh scored her 1,000th point, and since that first win, their momentum hasn’t slowed down.

On December 2, the ‘dogs were matched up against the Dixie Greyhounds and pulled out another big win, 64-23. Brumbaugh led the team with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 6 steals. Following close behind was Kate Copp with 16 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists, and Michaela Firks with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Other scorers were Sophie Layman with 5, Addi Case with 4, Addyson Sanders with 3, Kennedy Nichols with 2, and Mylee Jones with 2. After yet another win and impressive performance by the players, the team had two days of practice to prepare for a game against another undefeated team.

On December 5, the undefeated Troy Christian traveled to the Dog Pound to take on the undefeated Milton-Union. The two leading scorers in the league, Brumbaugh (19.3 points per game) and Karis Miller (18.3 points per game), were ready to go head-to-head and take away one another's undefeated title. However, the ‘dogs came out on top again.

In a win of 58-43, the girls advance their record to 3-0 (2-0 Three Rivers Conference). Firks and Brumbaugh led the team with 16 points each and contributed a total of 20 rebounds, 10 assists, 6 steals, and 5 blocks. When these two players both perform at the top of their game, they’re a hard duo to beat. They were both recently recognized as part of the top 12 girls basketball players in the Dayton area. But their win over the Eagles was a team effort. Copp added 10 points and 2 rebounds, Layman with 6 points, Case with 5, and Nichols with 2.
