Isaac leads Tipp to fourth-place finish
It was another successful weekend for the Tippecanoe wrestling squad, as they traveled north to compete in the Coldwater Invitational on Saturday. The Red Devils placed fourth overall out of 37 teams who participated in the event, including three Red Devils members advancing all the way to the championship match.
Collin Isaac, at 165 pounds, finished unbeaten on the day, winning the championship with a 12-0 major decision over Dameon Wolfe of Bryan.
Two more Tipp wrestlers lost in the championship round as Rohan Nicholls was pinned in the finals. Trent Thompson fell short at 144 pounds, losing by pin.
Isaac opened his day with a pin in 1:14 over Draven Ferguson of Sidney and came back with a 17-1 tech fall against Jimmy Berry of Firelands.
The Tipp junior had a tough challenge against Kwame Bonsu of Worthington Kilbourne before earning a pin in 2:49. This sent him into the finals, where he finished off Wolfe for the title.
Nicholls competed at 126 and had no trouble in his opening match 16-0 over Dominic Mitchell of Edgewood. The Tipp freshman then pinned Maddox Kennedy of Bryan in 1:52.
Nicholls then knocked off Conner Musser of Clinton Massie 6-4 and advanced to the finals with a 9-2 victory over Chase Sword of Mapleton. His run fell short with his pin loss in the finals.
Thompson also got into the finals with an opening round pin in 5:17 against Mason Breedlove of Edgewood. He then held on for a thrilling 11-9 victory over Alejandro Rejes of Lima Shawnee to advance into the semis. There, the Tipp grappler pinned Brady Hamilton of Coldwater in 3:40 before suffering a pin to Landon McCargish of Northmont.
Trace Frazier finished fifth for Tipp at 106 as he won his final match over Boaz Bost of West Carrollton in 3:27. Cade Frazier placed sixth at 157 as he lost his last match to Camden Gable of St. John’s 15-3.
Milton Union also had some success as Payton Mayfield won the fifth-place final against Estevan Barajas of Xenia 17-2. Finishing eighth was Seth Lowry at 144 as the Bulldog wrestler lost 9-1.
